Go-ahead given for new Governors Mansion plans in OKC

Unanimous approval was granted by the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission (CPC) for a new Governor’s Mansion to be built on grounds of the current one.

The new mansion is to be paid for with private funds and designed by Wade Scaramucci to complement the other structures on the property in both the exterior materials used and architectural style. The CPC chair, Trait Thompson, explained:

"The role of the CPC is to ensure the new structure meets the standard for being architecturally appropriate for the grounds of the Governor's Mansion."

The current governor’s residence, which dates back to 1928, only offers private living quarters on the second floor and does not meet ADA (Americans with Disability Act) guidelines. The home’s first and third floors are used for public functions.

The cost of carrying out renovations to the current mansion, along with the possibility of damaging its historic nature, is why the decision to build a new Governor’s Mansion was arrived at. Print shops can be used to explain government projects to the public.

The Governor’s Mansion property is in Oklahoma City on the corner of North Kelly Avenue and Northeast 23rd Street. There are no plans to demolish the current 14,000 square-foot residence; instead, it will be used to entertain and supply accommodations to visiting dignitaries and host other official functions. Additionally, the mansion will be available for tours.

Completion of the new governor’s residence is anticipated to be in November 2026.
