Music on the water in Oklahoma City
An unusual series of musical events is underway in Oklahoma City.
The Showboat Concert Series takes place aboard the Water Taxis that ply the Bricktown Canal. The original waterway was built in 1890, but the canal drained within two days, leaving an empty bed. The city began considering redevelopment early in the 1990s, and the revitalized canal opened in 1999, attracting businesses and tourists to the Bricktown neighborhood.
The events on the canal celebrate local artists of all kinds. During the summer, local musicians perform live concerts on the water taxis, which have also been decorated with murals painted by local artists. The evenings begin at the Bricktown Brewery, which is the check-in point in before the show, and which serves two handcrafted beers to those who arrive from 30 to 60 minutes before the event.
Fifteen minutes before the performance, guests will be escorted from the brewery to the departure point. Several concerts have already taken place but there are still many local artists scheduled to perform before the series ends. Upcoming shows are:
• June 24: Kyle Reid (Solo)
• July 1: No performance (break for the holiday)
• July 8: Kierston White (Solo)
• July 15: Rod Porter (Duo)
• July 22: Chase Kerby (Solo)
• July 29: Ckai Dawson (Duo)
• Aug 5: Jason Scott (Solo)
• Aug 12 Isaac McClung (Solo)
• Aug 19: Stephen Salewon (Solo)
• Aug 26: Chanda Graham (Duo)
