Workshop for teachers scheduled in Westerville

A special workshop for high school teachers who want to learn more about biotech is now available in Westerville.

Teachers who attended the GNG Ag Biotech workshop learned a great deal, and now are invited to attend the GNG AG Biotech Graduate Academy, to add to what they discovered at the prior conference. The Ohio Soybean Foundation and Pioneer are sponsoring the academy, where attendees will increase their existing knowledge and biotech skills. Teachers attending the course will learn about data analysis, bioinformatics, weed resistance, protein analysis, and will also be introduce to CRISPR.

CRISPR is an acronym for “clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats,” and the technology associated with it is used to edit the genome of an organism to treat diseases, and other purposes. Attendees will spend the first day working with CRISPR; exploring the NCBI database; understanding quantitative PCR; learning how to develop and analyze phylogenetic trees; and how to measure proteins.

The second day, attendees will assess the results of an experiment with CRISPR; look at a case study on weed resistance; and visit a research facility. Contact time and credit hours can be earned by those attending. Events like this give attendees a chance to exchange Business Cards.

Only Ohio teachers are eligible to attend, and they will be given $200 worth of supplies, meals, and one night in a hotel. The academy is scheduled for July 13 and 14, starting at 9.00 am on the 13th at Shear-McFadden Science Hall on Main Street.
