Westerville tour to walk path of Underground Railroad

Ohio History Connection will hold the Hanby Westerville Walking Tour next month to offer the public a chance to walk the steps of the Hanby family as they worked, lived, and helped during the era of the Underground Railroad in the mid-19th century.

The Hanby family was an integral part of Westerville history in the mid and late 1800s, especially in relation to the city’s role in the abolitionist movement. Patriarch William Hanby was the bishop of the local church, as well as a staunch abolitionist. He used his family home, the Hanby House, as a safe house along the Underground Railroad for slaves fleeing to freedom up North.

The walking tour will take approximately one-hour and will lead attendees through the paths and roads that the Hanby family traveled. The tour will begin at the historic house, which will be open for guided tours, and traverse Upper Westerville, with guides explaining what village life was like back then.

Organizers of walking tours such as this may find it beneficial to utilize local brochure printing services to prepare informative Brochures to hand out to tour guests.

The Hanby Westerville Walking Tour will take place on September 28, beginning at 1:00 pm. The Hanby House can be found at 160 West Main Street. There is no cost to attend either the house tour or the walking tour.
