Westerville offers helping hand with hazardous waste disposal

Disposing of hazard waste safely is always a problem, but Westerville is making it easy for its residents by hosting a Hazardous Waste Collection soon. The event will take place at the Public Service Department on Park Meadow Road.

Hazardous waste will be accepted in categories of corrosives, fats/oils/grease, electronics, reactives, toxics, and flammables. The list of acceptable materials is limited.

The corrosives that will be accepted are antifreeze, paint strippers, household bleach, and drain cleaners. Fats/oils/grease must be in sealed containers.

Electronics that are acceptable for collection are wires, radios, VCRs, fax machines, copiers, cameras, phones, televisions, and computer hardware. Acceptable reactives are strong chemicals, and those used to maintain swimming pools.

The list of toxic materials is NiCad batteries, mercury batteries, extinguishers, insecticides, rat poison, and CFL light bulbs. Finally, flammables that will be accepted are mixed oil and gasoline, kerosene, turpentine, thinner, and lighter fluid.

In addition, people can recycle up to four vehicle tires per household, and dispose of water-based or latex paints for a $1 per can fee.

There are a number of items that will not be accepted, such as trash, ammunition, medical waste, needles, propane tanks heavier than 20lb, and asbestos.

The waste collection date is this Saturday, May 18, from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm. Shredding will not be available on this day. Officials behind days like this sometimes use poster printing to create Signs to help people find the appropriate places to put their waste materials.
