Westerville announces waste collection date

Disposing of hazardous household waste safely is always a concern, and now Westerville has a solution.

The City of Westerville is hosting its SPRING Hazardous Waste Collection for 2020 at the Public Service Complex on Park Meadow Road. There will not be any shredding services offered at the event.

The items that residents may dispose of fall into six different categories: corrosives, electronics, fats/oils/grease, toxics, reactives, and flammables. Acceptable corrosives are:

• Antifreeze
• Household bleach
• Paint strippers
• Drain cleaners

Electronics that will be accepted are:

• Wires
• VCRs
• Radios
• Copiers
• Fax machines
• Phones
• Televisions
• Cameras
• Computer hardware

The two reactives that will be accepted are strong chemicals and pool chemicals.

Toxic substances that can be turned in are:

• Ni-Cad and mercury batteries
• Insecticides
• Extinguishers
• Rat poison
• CFL bulbs

Acceptable flammables are:


• Mixed gasoline and oil
• Kerosene
• Gasoline
• Turpentine and thinner
• Lighter fluid

Grease, oil, and fat must be placed in sealed containers. Tires will also be collected, but there is a limit of four per household. The city will also accept water-based and latex paints, but there is a charge of $1 per can.

Trash, ammunition, propane tanks weighing more than 20lb, asbestos, medical waste, and needles will not be accepted. Flyer printing can be used to create handouts for events like this.

At this time, the collection event is scheduled for May 16, from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm. Residents should check with the city about any change in scheduling.
