A 5K race and food drive, both for a good cause, are coming to Westerville.
The 2nd Annual Diabetes Dash 5K Run/Walk is now on the calendar, and a food drive has been added. The race is the project of Ryan Washburn, who received a diabetes diagnosis in 2018, and, as a result, began looking into the work of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He knew immediately that he wanted to help increase awareness of the disease, as well as supporting those with the disease, and working to find a cure. He came up with the idea of a 5K, and the event was born.
In addition to the race, this year will also see a food drive being held. Both the 5K and the drive are part of Washburn's Eagle Project, which he is pursuing as part of his participation in Westerville Troop 64. Race organizers are encouraging both spectators and participants to come to the race with a few non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the Westerville Area Resource Ministry (W.A.R.M.) food pantry.
Race day is August 2, and there are three events taking place. The 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:30 am, and the entree fee is $30. A Kids' Run for those eight and younger starts at 8:15 am, with an entree fee of $10. Those who prefer to make a Virtual Run have an entry fee of $30. Banner printing is a useful method for creating course markers for events like this.
