The final link in a trail that connects Westerville and Easton to Three Creeks Park, located near Groveport, opened October 2, 2015.
The last section of the Alum Creek Bike Trail to be opened was the Sycamore Bottoms Bridge, which crosses Alum Creek. At 22 miles, the trail is central Ohio's longest, and has been under construction for 16 years.
A ceremony, held near Ohio Dominican University, marked the trail's opening. Westerville mayor Michael Coleman was among those on hand to take part in the festivities. The trail will help to connect the university with the community surrounding it, as well as giving students, faculty members, and others an additional way to get to the campus.
Tony Collins, Columbus's director of recreation and parks, said there are 165,000 people living closer than a half-mile to the trail, and sees the link as a means to give them access to wellness and health. In addition, the trail is part of the Ohio to Erie Trail, a 330-mile route for non-motorists that starts at the Ohio River and ends at Lake Erie, winding through some of Ohio's prettiest scenery.
Now that the project is complete, Westerville officials might like to contact a booklet printing company to have material composed for Mailing to residents to encourage them to explore the new trail.
