Fiji, a Westerville police department K9 officer, will receive a protective vest, thanks to a donation made to Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., an East Taunton, Massachusetts charity. Vested Interest provides protective Vests to law enforcement dogs throughout the nation. Fiji's donation comes from a Delaware, Ohio resident, Greg Nobis, whose name will be embroidered on the vest. It's expected that Fiji will receive her vest in 8-10 weeks.
Vested Interest was founded in 2009 to help law enforcement agencies protect their K9 officers by providing body armor. Since then, the company has provided over 3,000 Vests to agencies in all 50 states, with a total value of about $5.7 million.
Fiji, who is now seven years of age, works with Officer Bryan Schwartz, and has been with the Westerville police for four years. She is a Belgian Malinois, a breed described as versatile, confident, and smart, and who forge strong bonds with their human partners.
Officer Schwartz calls Fiji a working dog who is serious about her job, and all business when she's on duty. He acknowledges that she's very alert, highly trained, and strong, but he's glad she'll have the protection brought by the vest, and says he's thankful for the donation.
Dogs who work with law enforcement and related agencies, who are at least 20 months old, and are certified, are eligible for a vest.
