Public works on one of Mentor’s busiest roads are expected to begin in September.
The City Council just made the decision to find contractors who will be tasked with resurfacing a stretch of Route 615 from Munson Road to Bellflower Road. Five companies put in bids for the project and the highest bid was $836,680. The contract went to Chagrin Valley Paving from Chagrin Falls with a bid of $737,023.
Approximately $400,000 of the money for construction will come from federal funds sourced from the Ohio Department of Transportation Urban Paving Program. Laying asphalt on the four lanes should be completed in the middle of October. Graphic design can be used to illustrate which parts of a road are under construction.
Ken Filipiak, the county manager, commented to say:
“I know there has been a lot of attention paid to this in recent years and we’ve tried to get this bumped up on the list, which, I believe, our engineering department was a success in doing.”
An average of 13,500 vehicles cross this stretch of highway every day. The contractors will close one lane on each side at a time to allow traffic to flow in both directions at all times. The last time that Route 615 was resurfaced was 20 years ago when the highway was widened to four lanes. The engineers expect significant delays, so drivers are advised to use other routes whenever possible while construction is ongoing.
