The presidential connection
In 1876, James A. Garfield bought a house in Mentor, which reporters dubbed Lawnfield. Garfield and his wife, Lucretia, were the parents of seven children, with five surviving into adulthood.
In 1880, he ran for president by conducting what became known as a “front porch campaign,” the first successful campaign of its type. In this effort, a candidate remains at home, and speaks to visitors who come to see him and discuss his programs and policies, rather than going out to campaign by visiting other areas. During this year, Garfield added 11 rooms to the house to make room for his family.
Garfield was assassinated and died in 1881. In 1885, Lucretia Garfield added a new wing to the house, calling it the “Memorial Library.” Her action set the precedent for creating presidential libraries. A retail center
Mentor is home to so many retailers that it ranked sixth-largest in the state at one time; and the number of restaurants here sent it to seventh position on that list. Most of the stores can be found along US 20, which here is Mentor Avenue – an area that includes Great Lakes Mall. The mall offers dozens of shopping and dining choices, including national chains such as Barnes and Noble; Macy's; which is one of the anchor tenants, and Victoria's Secret. The preserve is the newest in Ohio, and lies directly on the Lake Erie shore, where it occupies one-and-one-half miles of lakefront. Visitors will find a riverine marsh, plants found only on the dunes, open waterways, and an oak bluff with mature trees among the sights to enjoy. There are also three miles of biking and hiking trails throughout the preserve that give visitors four different views of Lake Erie, the forest, Mentor Marsh, and the marina.
