In the statement, the Governor said:
“The plan is not for you to have to repeat the school year. Every student now is still in school. Although you’re not physically in school, you’re doing work and working directly with the teacher. So, this counts as school and this counts as a school year.”
The state first ordered schools to be shut down on March 12 in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. It hoped to reopen schools on April 3, but they are now expected to stay closed until May 1 at the earliest, although the Governor says it is more likely that schools will stay closed for the rest of the school year.
Students in cities such as Mentor have been given guidelines on how to continue their studies remotely. Superintendents from districts such as Willoughby-Eastlake are proud of how well the teachers have been able to adapt from in-class lesson plans to online lessons. The districts are handing out laptops to students to ensure that they are able to access their schooling material. Companies wishing to support home learning could hand out promotional Pens.
All testing scheduled for this term has been canceled, however.
