The program will be pushed back by 60 days. Proponents of the delay say that they need the extra time to make sure that the plan is implemented properly. Senator Matt Dolan penned the amendments that were sent in with Senate Bill 120. These related to audits for performance and the partnerships between private and public schools.
Senator Dolan commented:
“I have to vote yes because I cannot in clear conscience at midnight tonight…allow those schools to go on a list that suggests they are underperforming or failing.”
Representatives from the House stated that they included amendments that change the deadline for applications from February 1st to April 1st. They were made in response to recommendations that were put into House Bill 9. Amendments passing through the senate often do so on Stationery with official Letterheads on them.
The senators who rejected the amendments did so because they felt that pushing back the deadline would not fix the issues. The schools that they already set up to receive EdChoice students from towns such as Mentor, and the students themselves, are unsure of how to proceed.
Senate Bill 120 passed with a majority vote of 23 to 6, and it has been confirmed that Governor Mike DeWine has signed it.
