Fire hydrant flushing for 2022 to start soon

The City of Hamilton will commence its annual fire hydrant flushing next week, a process that will continue into late fall.

This year, residents need not be surprised when their hydrants are being flushed due to the availability of a new online tracking tool that shows where crews will be working.

Flushing fire hydrants is an important annual preventive maintenance ritual that clears the natural accumulation of sediment from water mains. This extends the life of the city’s infrastructure as well as ensuring the hydrants will function properly in an emergency, and can help identify any hydrants that need servicing or replacement.

Flyer printing services are often used to inform the public of disruptions or changes to city services.

A brief occurrence of brown water coming out of facets may occur. Although safe, it recommended that residents avoid drinking the discolored water in such cases. It can take as much as a week after a flush for brown water to appear in a home. Residents are advised to simply let it run until it resumes its natural clear appearance in 5 to 10 minutes.

Neighborhood hydrants will be serviced on weekdays between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, beginning on Monday, May 2. Residents are asked to avoid washing clothes from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm when crews are in their area. Real time tracking of where the crews are working and where they will be moving to next is possible with the Hydrant Flushing Tracker.
