Wine class awaits in Dublin

Wine is meant to be enjoyed, but people are sometimes puzzled by the terms that go along with winemaking, and the meaning behind them. An upcoming class will help them learn.

Sommelier David Kusz, who is certified by the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, will be the instructor for the class, and will teach students how to appreciate wines, and how to find the vintages they will like most. Organizers of events like this can use flyer printing to create handouts for attendees.

Finding the right wine depends upon discovering the characteristics that appeal most to the purchaser, and then identifying the wines that contain these qualities. Kusz will start the class with a sensory exercise in which participants will determine what it is about a particular wine that they enjoy, so they can then choose wines with these qualities.

Wines in general are discussed with regard to aromas, flavor, sweetness, tannin, body, and acidity. Aroma, flavor, acidity, and sweetness are obvious, the other qualities are less familiar. Tannin is a measure of how astringent and bitter a wine is, while “body” refers to how rich and heavy a wine is.

The class will use six wines to help attendees discover what they prefer. The price of the event includes the sensory experience, cheese and snacks, and wines. The class is one of an ongoing series and next month’s event meets April 16 from 2:00 pm until 4:30 pm at the Brick House Blue in Dublin.
