Disposing of household hazardous waste safely is often difficult and time consuming, but Dublin is making it simple.
The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) gives Franklin County residents a way to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) by holding occasional recycling events. SWACO notes it is simple to identify HHW by looking for words like “corrosive,” “flammable,” “caution,” “danger,” “poison,” or “use in a well-ventilated area” on the label. They also suggest residents try to find alternatives to these products.
The City of Dublin and SWACO have joined to give residents a chance to dispose of their HHW. There are several categories of items that will be accepted, including flammables adhesives, reactives, corrosives, toxics, and more.
Flammables adhesives include such products as spray paint, kerosene, and motor oil. Reactives are pool chemicals and cyanides, while corrosives are such products as household cleaners, acids, and paint strippers. Toxics are products like rat poison, antifreeze, and batteries. Grease, oil, and fat will be accepted, as will unclassified items like smoke detectors.
There are also many products that will not be accepted, such as ammunition, appliances, trash, and e-waste. The event is for residents only and commercial waste will not be accepted.
The upcoming event is set for May 7, from 8.00 am until 2.00 pm at the City of Dublin Fleet Complex on Shier Rings Road. Lists of items are helpful for people attending events like this and can be created organizers using flyer printing.
