More than books to check out at local library

Students at Grizzell Middle School in Dublin have plenty going on at their library, thanks to sixth-grade students Dylan Kunz and Nitya Nekkanti.

With the help of librarian Mitzi Moshiri, the duo was able to put an aquarium in the library, and stock it with fish species native to Ohio. Among these are bass, bluegill, southern Louisiana crawfish, and an aquatic snail.

Kunz was involved with an aquaponics project during the last school year, which inspired her to work on the aquarium. She and Nekkanti got the fish from Urbana's Freshwater Farms of Ohio, using funds raised from a book fair at the library.

At the moment, plants in the tank are made of plastic, but Nekkanti and Kunz plan to put in real ones once the weather turns warmer. Nekkanti said real plants are better for the fish than artificial ones, since they make the habitat more natural. Eventually, Grizzell's fishing club will take over the care of the fish.

Installing the aquarium has caused the students to undertake additional activities. Nekkanti has created boards to put near the aquarium, listing facts about the fish. In addition, she and Mishiri have set up a box for students to use to ask questions about the aquarium.

Installations like this can benefit if organizers work with a flyer printing company, which can create weekly Flyers with information and facts about the aquarium.
