Dublin residents who wanted to help their neighbors, and receive a ticket to a fun festival in return, turned out on Sunday, August 3, to donate food.
The Dublin Food Pantry gave people free admission to the Irish Festival if they brought a food item to the drive before 11:00 am on Sunday.
The result was astonishing and gratifying—the pantry collected more than 19,000lb of food, which was 5,000lb most than last year and the largest amount in the history of the drive. It took 200 volunteers the entire day to sort the donations. Most of the food donated went onto the pantry’s shelves at its location on West Bridge Street, with the remainder going into the pantry’s warehouse.
The food pantry collects food during the Dublin Irish Festival, which is its biggest drive of the year. The pantry supplies Dublin-area families with 350,000lb of food every year, which equates to approximately 150,000 meals. The pantry helps about 240 families each month, some of which have part-time jobs, work temporary assignments, or earn at or below minimum wage, and are often dependent upon the help of the pantry.
With the need ongoing, the Dublin Food Pantry could work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer, letting people know there is food available for them and encouraging donations from those in a position to make them.
