Dublin Youth Strings Orchestra performs at annual conference

The Dublin Youth Strings Orchestra (DYSO), comprised of skilled young players, performed earlier this month for the annual conference of music professional and educators at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA).

All students from grades four through twelve in any of the Dublin City schools are eligible to join the DYSO. Matt Hawley, who is a co-director of the orchestra with Michael Brosius, sent a Tape of the group to the OMEA, since the opportunity to play at the conference is by invitation. Only four groups were selected from Ohio.

This is the third time the DYSO has been given the honor of playing the conference, so Brosius and Hawley knew what to expect, and chose the program accordingly. They devised a 10-song presentation of many different types of music, ranging from the classics to whimsical offerings.

Hawley founded the DYSO in 1999, when music-loving students wanted to do more outside of class. About 10 students were involved in the beginning, but over the years the group has grown, and now has approximately 90 members. The orchestra practices weekly from October to the spring break. The next audition is set for June 2.

The orchestra's directors is no doubt creating Brochures about the group and Mailing them to residents throughout the school district, encouraging students to audition.
