Dublin plans big celebration on the 4th

Dublin's Independence Day festivities promise to be a lot of fun for everyone concerned.

The theme this year is “Rockin' all over the world”, and the day's events will end with a concert by rock veteran John Fogerty.

The day starts with the traditional Sherm Sheldon Fishing Derby, which will be held at the pond at the Dublin Community Recreation Center, starting at 8:00 am on July 4. Mary Jo DiSalvo, one of Dublin's events administrators, says she is sure there are plenty of fish in the pond, and that she sees children fishing there constantly.

At 9:30 am, the Inflation Celebration will start, as parade participants start to inflate their balloons. Once the balloons have been fully inflated the parade will start. The route begins Metro Center at 11:00 am, heads down Route 161 to Historic Dublin, then goes south on High Street. According to DiSalvo, there are approximately 100 parade entries.

The day ends with the concert by Fogerty, who was the lead singer for Creedence Clearwater Revival from 1967 to 1972, and who has a number of solo hits to his credit. His show starts at 8:15, with fireworks finishing off the day at about 9:50 pm.

City officials might want to add to the fun by working with a banner printing company to create festive streamers to hang above the various event venues.
