Dublin gets ready to unveil new mural

Community members got recently together to paint a mural in the pedestrian tunnel that runs beneath Dublin Road where it intersects Brandonway Drive.

The work has a theme of flying, and the human desire to do so. The subject of the mural is healthy living, and the project derived from a partnership among the Dublin Arts Council, the city of Dublin, and Franklin County's Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Health (ADAMH) Board. Bailey Elementary School students got involved as well, and residents turned out to help with the painting.

ADAMH CEO David Royer said including the community in the project allowed the citizens of Dublin to feel that the mural is truly theirs. Projects such as this, according to Royer, allow every community to determine how it will view itself. In the case of Dublin, the city is already known for its spirit of community involvement, and for the number of people who volunteer for various activities.

The subject of the mural was decided by students and residents, who together came up with the ideas of fruits and vegetables. Approximately 100 volunteers worked to prep the tunnel and help paint the mural itself.

The mural will be revealed August 13. Dublin officials might consider working with a banner printing company to create festive pieces to hang at either end of the tunnel, celebrating the occasion.
