Dublin gets ready for St. Patrick's Day

Dublin, Ohio, loves to celebrate its Irish heritage, and is getting ready to do so with its annual St. Patrick's Day parade.

This year, something new has been added – the parade will feature two new “guests”: step-dancing puppets. These puppets, however, are 15 feet tall. They will make their first appearance during the parade, and will be back in August for the Dublin Irish Festival.

According to Dublin's events administrator, Mary Jo DiSalvo, the inspiration for the two gigantic puppets came from seeing similar puppets in other parades, as well as at a Halloween event in Columbus. She noted that it is almost impossible to describe them, suggesting people will have to see the step dancers for themselves.

The puppets are the creation of Bruce Hanners, whose team began working on the puppets last October, at the Columbus College of Art and Design. It took the team about six weeks to design a mold to make the puppets, and another six weeks to cast them. Carbon fiber Forms the bulk of the puppets, with aluminum added to their joints for flexibility.

The parade this year is scheduled for March 18, the Saturday after St. Patrick's Day. It will kick off at 11:00 am at Metro Place, and then wind through the city's historic downtown.

Events like this can be enhanced if organizers display colorful Banners to add to the fun of the day.
