Dublin explores complexity of wine

An upcoming event will allow people to learn all about wines, whether they are well acquainted with the drink or find choosing a bottle to be a little intimidating.

Sommelier David Kusz is certified as an expert by the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) and will help attendees find the wines they will enjoy most by working with them to identify the characteristics of the wine they find most appealing.

The course explores a wine’s key components—aroma, flavor, sweetness, tannin, body, and acidity. Each component helps to create the wine’s individual characteristics and changing even one can change the drink substantially. Aroma, flavor, and sweetness are self-explanatory, but the other terms may not be familiar.

Tannins are compounds that occur naturally and are found in grape stems, seeds, and skins. When added to grape juice just after pressing, they give wine astringency, or dryness. The “body” of a wine refers to how it feels in the mouth, with some wines feeling “heavier” than others, while a wine that is highly acidic may cause a prickling sensation. Explorations of terms like these makes the upcoming class suited to both beginners and those who want to learn more about this complex product.

The class is scheduled for December 4 from 2:00 pm until 4:30 pm at the Brick House Blue in Dublin’s Bridge Park. Flyer printing can be used to publicize events like this.
