A total of 149 artists in 37 states submitted works to be considered for display as public art in Dublin recently. These have now been winnowed down to three finalists, which were seen by judges and residents on February 29.
The three finalists were Ilan Averbuch, Po Shug Wang, and Olga Ziemska. Averbuch is from Long Island City in New York, while Wang hails from Berkeley, California. Ohio representative Ziemska is from Cleveland.
The chosen piece of public art will be installed in Thaddeus Kosciuszko Park, located on Hard Road. The park, named for a colonel who fought in the Revolutionary War, comprises 36.5 acres, and includes fishing points, trails, and a sinkhole overlook.
The three artists' proposals differ greatly. Ziemska's piece, called ‘Feather Point’, is a wooden feather, 21 feet tall, which she would create from wood found in the park. The final piece will be cast in aluminum. Wang took his inspiration from the sinkhole and an oak tree, seeing the sinkhole as a way into the earth, and the tree as a route into the sky. Averbuch, meanwhile, calls his work ‘Dreams and Gravity’; it includes two heads, each 10 feet high, with one right side up and the other upside down.
Dublin officials might create Banners featuring the winning piece to be hung in the park at the same time the work is installed.
