In anticipation of the snowy season, Dublin held SnowGo, an annual event, on September 29.
The day started with a training session for the 45 employees who are responsible for removing snow. They reviewed road rules, materials, safety, and truck operations, then took part in a ‘roadeo’ for fun. Among the events was an obstacle course for snowplows, consisting of barrels and cones.
Rob James, Dublin's director of Streets and Utilities Operations, always expects the worst when it comes to winter. In a Dublin Villager article, he said it is “better that way.” With that in mind, he said he does not expect this winter to be as mild as last year, when Dublin used 3,760 tons of salt as opposed to the 11,000 it usually spreads on the streets. At the moment, Dublin has about 4,000 tons of salt in storage, and has the money to buy another 12,400 tons, according to James. He thinks that should be enough for the winter.
Smaller trucks were also provided so city employees who do not have commercial driver's licenses could take part. Later in the day, drivers who will be responsible for snow removal took part in a ‘dry run’, driving the snowplows along the routes they will have to cover after a storm.
