Dublin, Ohio, allegedly was named by an Irishman named John Shields, who surveyed the area with his partner, John Sells, when Sells brought his family to the region in the early 1800s. Given the honor of naming the new town, Shields chose to name it after his birthplace in Ireland. Today, residents celebrate their community's heritage with the Dublin Irish Festival, a three-day celebration of all things Irish that is the biggest such event on earth.
