Citizens Police Academy seeks applications from Dubliners

Dublin residents interesting in learning more about policing might consider signing up for the 2016 Citizens Police Academy.

The Dublin police are accepting applications now, even though the academy is not scheduled to take place until later this year. The early deadline is necessary because of the course’s popularity, and because it takes time to select attendees.

The program is 12 weeks long, and gives students a working knowledge of law enforcement as a profession, as well as introducing them to the way the Dublin police work. Police academies are popular throughout the country, though each program varies by the jurisdiction. Commonly, they feature things like the chance to “ride-along” with a patrol officer and an overview of the department's organization.

The academy is scheduled to start late in August. The scheduled classes will be held at the Dublin Justice Center every Thursday evening, from August 25 to November 10, from 6:30 pm to 9:30 p.m. Graduation will be held November 17.

Interested persons are invited to apply online, but need to do so by 5:00 pm this Sunday, May 1. The program is open to everyone, but Dublin residents will be given preference, and all applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Police officials could work with a poster printing company to create poster for the downtown area, announcing the academy and the deadline.
