Baseball players and coaches at Xavier University have gone beyond just working to raise money—they have shaved their heads in the effort.
The team pledged to do this the start of campaign to raise $10,000 to benefit both Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and cancer researchers across the nation. Having worked alongside the Vs. Cancer Foundation, the baseball stars kept their part of the bargain after Xavier beat Villanova 4-0 on April 13.
When the game was over, 15 players and coaches, along with Jody Jenike, Xavier's head athletic trainer, had their heads shaved in front of the team and a number of fans. Musketeers coach Scott Googins and assistant coach Billy O'Conner also had their heads shaved, along with 13 players. The fundraising was successful—the players and coaches raised $11,479, surpassing their original goal and ranking them eighth of 120 teams participating in the effort across the country.
The successful fundraiser was the cherry on top for the team, whose win over Villanova's Wildcats meant they remained undefeated in their conference.
The team could work with brochure printers to create a mailer for area residents, explaining their campaign and how other people can get involved in the fight against children's cancers. They might also consider making the campaign an annual event, and encourage others to participate.
