Bruce Hornsby is a native of Williamsburg, Virginia, and studied music at the Berklee College of Music, University of Richmond, and the University of Miami, where he earned his degree. He began his career in 1974 when Bobby, his older brother, formed a band called “Bobby Hi-Test and the Octane Kids,” and asked Bruce to join the group. The Octane Kids mostly played covers for groups like The Band, the Allman Brothers Band, and particularly the Grateful Dead. From 1988 to 1995, Bruce appeared with the Grateful Dead more than 100 times.
He formed the band “Bruce Hornsby and the Range” in 1984 and launched his recording career with his huge hit “The Way It Is,” which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It has become a favorite of rap artists, with Tupac Shakur among those known to have enjoyed it. The album went on to achieve Platinum status.
His founded his current group, “Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers,” around 2000, and began to experiment with a different sound. “’Flicted,” his latest album, dropped this year.
A review says:
