The Dave Matthews Band’s original lineup was Matthews, LeRoi Moore, and Carter Beauford, with Stefan Lessard joining later. Moore plays the sax, Beauford the drums, and both are jazz musicians. Lessard rounded out the group, adding his bass to balance out Matthew’s work on the guitar. They first joined up in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1991.
Their debut album was “Under the Table and Dreaming,” which dropped in 1994. In the years since then, they have released nine studio albums, seven of which went all the way to No. 1 on the US charts. Their most recent studio album, “Come Tomorrow,” was released in 2018. In their career, they have sold more than 35 million CDs and DVDs. As if their chart performance weren’t enough, they are also 1997 Grammy winners for “So Much to Say.”
The band also took an unusual approach to marketing, allowing fans to record their concerts live. They credit their rise in popularity to the fact that college students traded tapes. At one point, they allowed recordists to patch directly to their soundboard.
