Kroger Co. has bought more than 12 acres at Oakley Station, on which it plans to build its biggest Cincinnati-area store.
The food giant will be the anchor tenant of the retail section of Oakley Station, which is a mixed-use development comprising 74 acres. Kroger's new store will have more than 145,500 square feet of space, compared to most of its locations’ average of 115,000 square feet, making it the biggest Kroger in the Cincinnati area.
Rob Smyjunas, who is CEO of Oakley Station developer Vandercar Holdings, said the new store would serve many people around Oakley Station itself, and throughout the region. He noted that this store will have a lot more merchandise available than most of the other stores in the chain.
Smyjunas also said that adding Kroger Marketplace to the tenant roster should speed up the pace at which stores sign up, adding that Vandercar wanted to sign Kroger first, so other prospective tenants would be comfortable knowing the center has such an anchor. The new Kroger Marketplace is slated to open sometime in the first three months of 2015.
Other tenants already in place include the large residential development Boulevard at Oakley Station, and a Cinemark Theater.
Kroger could work with a banner printing company to have flags and placards ready to celebrate the opening.
