Kim Waters is a native of Havre de Grace, Maryland, where he took up the saxophone at a tender age. His technical proficiency made him comfortable playing both R&B and jazz. He worked both as a jazz musician and as a member of a backing act for a hotel lounge. He decided to go back to school, but quickly realized his future lay in music and took it up full time.
He released his first album, “Sweet and Saxy,” in 1989, which returned sales totals of six figures. He came along just as radio stations and record buyers were enjoying the trend of smooth jazz. Subsequent albums also did well, and Waters became a force within the genre.
Waters has released 24 solo albums, and three albums with The Sax Pack, a group Waters, Steve Cole, and Jeff Kashiwa formed in 2008. They released their debut album the same year. “The Sax Pack” rose to No. 13 on the Billboard charts. Their next album, “The Pack is Back,” dropped the following year, made it to No. 16.
