A popular event is returning to Cincinnati for the seventh year, with a different take on the holidays.
As in the past, the Merry Gentlemen are presenting their Island Christmas Holiday concert, which combines two traditions – classic Christmas songs and Caribbean music – into a mix that raises a smile.
The Merry Gentlemen take favorite Christmas tunes and put a tropical spin on them. Audiences might hear “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” performed in a reggae style, or a Mumford & Sons rendition of an original song. Of course, there will also be plenty of holiday favorites, but The Merry Gentlemen might add in ukuleles and steel drums to bring the feel of the islands to a frosty northern city. A singalong to soca party tunes is planned as well.
The Merry Gentlemen draw from a variety of genres to prepare their concerts, and are at home in many different styles. The event has been described as what happens when Bob Marley runs into “White Christmas” on an island in the Caribbean.
The Island Christmas Holiday concert is scheduled for Thursday, December 1 at the Redmoor, in Cincinnati’s Mt. Lookout area. The doors will open at 6:00 pm with food and bar service available.
