Grocery store planned as part of Cincinnati redevelopment

The Model Group is redeveloping an historic block of buildings at 1800 Race Street, close to Findlay Market.

The group plans to include a small grocery as part of the project. Findlay Market is a Cincinnati institution, and is a public market that was built in 1852 and has been in continuous operation ever since. Approximately 24 vendors are at the market year-round, while on weekends from April to November, many more sellers, including vendors and street performers, gather to make up a farmers' market.

The new grocery store will comprise approximately 5,000 square feet, and is meant to complement the vendors at Findlay Market, not compete with them, according to the Model Group's COO, Bobby Maly.

Maly went on to say the new grocery is neither a convenience store, nor a huge supermarket like Kroger. The operator of the new store has not yet been named, but the Model Group expects it will soon sign a letter of intent with the tenant.

The new location offers 15,000 square feet of retail space, of which the grocery will take about a third. At least part of the remaining space will be occupied by a restaurant. Maly remains enthusiastic about working with Findlay Market, saying the new store will be an extension of the established icon.

The new tenant could work with a flyer printing company to create handouts, including perhaps coupons, for distribution during opening day.
