Mat Kearney, who was born in Oregon, was in the eighth grade before he realised someone had spelled his name incorrectly on his birth certificate, listing him as “Mathew” instead of “Matthew.” That certainly didn’t slow him down, and he became interested in music after helping a friend move to Nashville. Kearney made several demos with Robert Marvin, the friend who moved, and finally decided to remain in Tennessee.
After relocating, Kearney began to develop his own style, blending spoken word, acoustic music, and rap, a combination he tested in local coffee shops. The positive reaction to his work gave Kearney the impetus to release his first album, “Nothing Left to Lose,” which he dropped in 2006. It took some time to find its “legs,” but it sold more than 450,000 Copies, with some of the songs used in such hit television shows as “Scrubs” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”
“Young Love” and “City of Black and White,” his next two albums, were also successful, placing 4th and 13th, respectively, on Christian charts.
