The Cincinnati Public Schools recently held a job fair in a search for new teachers for most city schools.
Over 5,000 students have come into the district in the past five years, leading to a shortage of teachers. Julia Indalecio, who is the school system's recruiting manager, says they are looking for 280 new teachers, who will fill positions in almost all of the 63 schools in the district. New hires can use business card printing to create the cards they need.
Indalecio says the district needs math teachers, and since it is offering more and more technological classes, it's also looking for teachers qualified in technical fields. She added that as the district's demographics change, it's becoming important that teachers become able to work with students whose first language is not English, as well as those with other challenges.
In addition, Indalecio says that the district welcomes people who are currently working in other fields, but who would like to become teachers. She also says the schools are trying to hold onto the good teachers they have, by finding creative ways to support them. They also want to help new hires by mentoring them for an entire year. If the teachers need more help, the mentoring continues through their second and third year with the system.
Teachers start at a salary of slightly more than $43,000 annually, and these can go up to as much as $98,000.
