Rockville Centre to get scoop on seals

The Rockville Centre area is gearing up for the arrival of a new year, and it will be kicking off 2024 with a special guided hike.

The Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center will be opening the new year with a morning activity that will introduce the public to the seals that call the beach of Long Island home. The registrants will meet up at Field 10 before they hit the trail, and a guide will help the participants spot these marine animals out in the water.

The hikers will walk the beach, learning about the species of seals that can be found in the area, as well as their life cycle and the threats they face. The facilitator will have a spotting scope to help view them while they swim. As the activity is planned for the winter, everyone is advised to dress warmly in layers.

While the beach is not accessible to those who require a mobility device, there is interpretive signage on the docks, and it may be possible to spot seals from this location. A brochure printing company can craft learning materials for a special wildlife event.

Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center will be offering the scoop on seals with this activity planned for Monday, January 1, 2024. It will begin at 10:00 am.
