The Rockville Centre Parks and Recreation Department is putting together a summer training camp that is sure to make children say ‘touche’.
The Fencing Academy is a five-day event that will give participants aged 8 to 14 the chance to begin learning this classic sport.
The camp will focus on all the basics needed to build the fundamentals of fencing. Footwork, bladework, and basic strategy will all be covered, giving students a true feeling of success and capability in basic swordplay. Additionally the course will offer a variety of games meant to build agility, speed, and endurance - all skills that are key to becoming an accomplished fencer.
The Flyers stress the dynamic speed and relentless nature of the sport as it is played nowadays, likening it to lightsaber duels rather than the slower fights seen in classic movies. Most touches are scored electronically, because the combatants move so quickly it would be otherwise impossible to count. The sport provides both mental and physical challenge.
The Fencing Academy will be held from August 8 through 12 from 12:30 to 3:30 pm every day at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center Gymnasium. Cost for participating is $175 for Rockville Centre residents and $190 for nonresidents. Attendees should bring sweatpants, a T-shirt, sneakers, water, and a snack. Anyone interested in registering should visit the website for more info.
