Local music enthusiasts can enjoy an afternoon of classic jazz

The Liverpool Public Library will soon be presenting another program in its LPL’S Winter Concert Series.

‘The Origins of Jazz: From Ragtime to Swing’ is a free program that will feature the Bear Cat Jass Band. This group was organized by Joe Hanlon back in 1977 with the intent to preserve and share traditional jazz music, which the band members believe is ‘one of America’s national treasures’.

This performance will focus on classic jazz from the 1920s. The band leader, Dick Ames will be setting the down beat for the eight musicians who will be playing everything from trombone, reeds and trumpet, to cornet, piano, banjo, and drums.

Compositions from Jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Joe ‘King’ Oliver, and Sidney Bechet will be part of the evening’s program. Some songs in the band’s repertoire may include ‘Yes, Sir, That’s My Baby’ and ‘Creole Love Call’. The band usually opens with ‘Just Because’ and its closes with ‘Blue Turning Gray over You’.

Those planning to attend will want to mark their Calendars for March 20. The event will be in the Carman Community Room at the Liverpool Public Library, 3410 Tulip St, Liverpool. Starting time will be 2:00 pm, and the program will go until 3:30 pm.
