This weekend, Syracuse, New York, which is only a short drive away from Liverpool, will be holding its annual Juneteenth celebration.
Juneteenth is believed to be the oldest celebration of the official end of slavery in America. Though President Lincoln made his Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1893, it wasn't until June 19 of 1865 that Major General Gordon Granger led his regiment into Galveston, Texas and shut down the last plantations. There are many myths as to why it took so long for the laws to be officially enacted, ranging from the messenger who was to deliver the initial message being assassinated en route, to the Union army wanting to wait for the plantation owners to gather a final crop before moving in. Either way, it is a time worth recognizing.
The Syracuse celebration will begin at 10:00 am tomorrow, June 15, with a Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall. Mayor Stephanie Miner and other dignitaries will read proclamations to those who attend. The festivities will continue at noon on Saturday with the Visions of Victory Parade, which will begin at the Dr. King School and end at Clinton Square. Following the parade, there will be food available.
Printing businesses in the area will be hard at work creating Flyers for this event.
