Teenager recognized for autism support
Senator Todd Kaminsky recently honored John Rigazio, a teenager from Hewlett’s neighbouring area Rockville Center, with a proclamation to recognize his efforts to raise funds and support autism research and awareness.
Last month, Rigazio participated in Bike to the Beach, a course 100 miles long that started in Battery Park in New York City and ended in Westhampton Beach. He and his father, Joseph, completed the hugely challenging ride on a tandem bike to Wantagh and then finished the trip with his mother, Jacqueline.
He was part of Team Talisen, which was comprised of 25 riders. They raised $40,000 for autism research and awareness, with one of the beneficiaries being Autism Speaks.
To prepare for the century, Rigazio spent months training every weekend, increasing his distance so that he was up to biking 65 miles prior to the event. Being a member of the track team, he said, also helped to build his stamina.
Kaminsky commented that he was impressed by John’s spirit and tenacity, adding that he felt privileged to be able to recognize his outstanding accomplishment.
Rigazio’s mother added that the entire family is very excited and honored by this recognition. They will continue to raise funds and awareness for autism, and may consider hiring a local print company to create flyers and other materials promoting their cause.
