When household chemicals, medications and other substances are poured down the drain, they often end up polluting the environment, and a Hewlett area program has been set up to help keep this from happening.
The Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) is being run in the local area, and a collection day has been set up for early March. Anyone who would like to take this step in environment stewardship is welcome to do so, and a collection station will be set up in Eisenhower Park.
The activity will be running throughout the day, the public can bring unwanted chemicals such as antifreeze, pesticides, drain cleaners and other substances, and these will be collected and disposed of safely. This will help to keep pollutants out of bays and estuaries as well as the area’s ground water supply, and it's been requested that a few simple steps be taken to help make the process go smoothly, Any leaking containers should be wrapped, and lid or caps must be tight. Sharps will not be accepted, but items containing mercury may be dropped off.
When added together, even small environmental service projects can make a big impact. A poster printing company can help spread the word, and can also prepare reusable materials such as Signs for special events.
A collection day for the S.T.O.P. program has been scheduled for March 7th. It will be open from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm.
