Respected local veteran given new home
Jessica Lopez is now enjoying a comfortable new home in Roosevelt, just a few miles from Hewlett, thanks to the generosity of a team of individuals and organizations.
Lopez made many sacrifices as a Navy yeowoman. She spent several years training soldiers in the difficult task of identifying Vietnam-era remains to ensure that none of these soldiers were forgotten. The emotionally challenging effort helped many families to have answers about the fate of their loved ones, but contributed towards Lopez enduring the strain of living with PTSD while managing her daily life as a wife and mother of five children.
This sacrifice is what prompted the Town of Hempstead with the assistance of several veterans’ organizations to aid the woman and her family in securing a comfortable and affordable home. The keys to a newly renovated rental home were given to the family after it was acquired by the Meadowbrook Development Corporation, a nonprofit agency that strives to help all veterans affordable homes.
The security deposit, all initial fees and the first two rent payments will be paid for by Supportive Services for Veteran Families. Two local contractors that performed the work on the home also helped to provide home furnishings and the housing authority is working with the family to find affordable options that would enable them to purchase the home and make it their permanent residence.
Supportive Services for Veteran Families is run under the supervision of Volunteers of America and can be found by visiting the group's website.
