Outside seating to add class to Valley Stream
Valley Stream is currently running a trial program wherein restaurant owners can have sidewalk seating outside their establishments. Those who come to the village from nearby Hewlett may want to see if this is something they want to implement in their town.
According to a consultant for the village, Vinny Ang, the goal is to make the commercial areas of Valley Stream look cleaner and more upscale. It is hoped that businesses will take advantage of this program so that the streets will be more inviting, particularly where there is a clustering of restaurants.
Ang added that the program could act as an incentive for restaurants to move to Rockaway Avenue and other busy streets, so that stores that are less busy, such as real estate offices and nail salons, could move to the side streets.
Eventually the program will become permanent so that more foot traffic will be created along commercial streets, thereby becoming destinations in and of themselves.
Tables and chairs can be outside from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and need to leave four feet of sidewalk space for pedestrians. Light poles on Rockaway Avenue have been decorated with white Christmas lights for decoration after dark.
Mayor Ed Fare of Valley Stream may want to promote this program, which runs until October 31, by having flyers made that can be distributed to restaurants outlining the rules of the program and the many advantages.
