What's Happening in Hewlett, NY…

New and faster action in effect for potholes

Anthony J. Santino, Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead, which is just a short distance from Hewlett, recently announced that the town has a new plan for dealing with the many potholes on roads caused by changes in temperature and snowstorms.

He has created a ‘S.W.A.T.’ (Special Weapons and Tactics) Team, that will have new equipment in the form of hot boxes to carry hot asphalt to the sites of potholes. In addition, larger sections of damaged roadway will be cut and patched by other road-paving equipment.

Also, as opposed to the traditional single department response, there will now be a multidepartment response so more potholes can be fixed more quickly. Santino commented that the number of trucks dedicated to the fixing of potholes has been increased from 18 to 30, and the number of hot boxes by 266%.

More personnel has been added in that crews from the Sanitation Department and the Parks Department have joined those of the Highway Department to fix the potholes. Santino said that with more crews and equipment, more potholes will be able to be fixed in a shorter period of time.

The town may use a local print company to create a mailer that can be sent to residents informing them of the new strategy and procedures for reporting potholes.
