What's Happening in Hewlett, NY…

Miami beach comes to New York

For those in Hewlett who want to take advantage of the sites along Rockaway Beach, they can go to Beach 96th Street, where palm trees have recently been delivered by several residents of Miami.

David Selig, the co-owner of the Rockaway Taco that was once across the street from the lot where the palm trees were dropped off, manned the bobcat that lifted the palm trees, weighing 3,000 pounds, from the truck and put them in place on the empty lot. These trees are part of his plan to take the lot, which will feature retail shops and other amenities with coral from the Florida Keys paving the space. Tropical plants and palm trees will offer decorations.

Founder of Local Office Landscape Architecture, Walter Mayer, who is in charge of landscaping for the project, was also on hand to guide the trees to their proper location. He said that this landscape is going to have a great impact on the area.

Mayer added that the palm trees will remain throughout the year and will be placed in a glass house so they can survive the weather in New York City during the winter.

No doubt Selig will be turning to a local print company to help with creating a billboard announcing his plans for the lot and its unique features.
