What's Happening in Hewlett, NY…

Long Island residents to take a step back in time

This month, those in and around Hewlett are invited to Old Bethpage Village Restoration to experience the excitement of attending a 19th-Century women's rights rally.

Old Bethpage Village Restoration is a unique historic area that allows visitors to get a glimpse into the life of the everyday American in the mid-19th Century. The village is a collection of relocated and restored homes set together in a beautiful 200-acre park made to mimic the look of an 1860s village.

On May 14, the living museum will host its own Mother's Day parade and reenact a rally. The event will take place from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and will include the rally, speeches and a parade all in keeping with the suffrage theme. The onsite auditorium will also hold a performance of ‘Suffrage and Courage – a 20th Century Tale of Women’s Quest for Equality’.

Visitors can visit the village homes and watch women make candles, see pottery being crafted or check out what the blacksmith is making. The active village has era-appropriate food on site, farm animals, and much more.

All activities for the special day, which will no doubt be supported with brochure printing, are covered under the museum's admission fees. Adult tickets are $12 and children under 12, seniors and volunteer firefighters pay only $8. Old Bethpage Village Restoration is at 133 Round Swamp Road in Bethpage. Call (516) 572-8400 for more information about the event.
