Local high school student reaches semi-final for prestigious science award

Hewlett High School student Matthew Raymond Perkins has gone through to the semi-finals of the Regeneron 2017 Science Talent Search.

Chosen from around 1,700 applications, 300 semifinalists will be hoping to be among the 40 finalists to be announced on January 24.

The final will take place in March in Washington D.C., where the finalists will compete for a $250,000 first prize. Candidates had to submit 20-page presentation folders outlining their research projects as part of the rigorous and highly competitive selection process. These folders had to document the candidates’ independent scientific studies. The project Perkins submitted was titled, ‘Alpha and Beta Adrenergic Agonists Increase Hindrance to Diffusion of 3-kDa Dextran in Mouse Visual Cortex Extracellular Space’.

As a leading science competition for high school students, the Science Talent Search has been going since 1942, first with partners Westinghouse, then from 1998 to 2016 with Intel and now in 2017 with Regeneron. The award aims to showcase the talents of upcoming student scientists by giving them the opportunity to present their work to professional scientists.

Recognising and funding around 3,000 finalists, with $13m of scholarship money, the Science Talent Search has an illustrious list of former recipients including eighteen MacArthur Foundation Fellows, eleven National Medals of Science winners, two Fields Medalists, and twelve Nobel Laureates.
