What's Happening in Hewlett, NY…

Local Foundation to help fund science and technology program

A charitable organisation, based in Hewlett and run by Richard and Norma Rosenberg, is to help fund a science and technology program called the STEAM Shack.

The project is part of an existing initiative called Camp Sunrise, which also benefits from funding provided by the Laura Rosenberg Foundation, named after the Rosenberg’s 14-year-old daughter who they lost to leukaemia in 1981.

Camp Sunrise, based in Wheatley Heights, is a summer camp for children with cancer and their siblings. It is one of four projects that is supported by the Foundation.

The new initiative is projected to cost around $250,000, of which $82,000 has already been raised. The 1,280-square foot space will house computers, 3D printers, music, and video mixers. Built using shipping containers and powered by solar panels, the STEAM Shack will also be fully sustainable and portable, allowing it to be taken to any of the 30 hospitals supported by Camp Sunrise and the other four camps that are part of the program, some of which are in Israel.

The acronym STEAM stands for ‘science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics’. It is hoped that the STEAM Shack will allow children with cancer access to the most state-of-the-art technology possible, where they may learn such skills as graphic design or video editing.

Deanna Slade, Camp Sunrise Director, said:

“It’s really incredible what these camps do for these kids”.
