High school students raise funds for Chinese middle school
Two juniors from Hewlett High School have started an organisation called ‘Raffles for Change’ in order to raise money for a middle school in Beijing.
The school offers education to the children of migrant workers who do not have a Beijing registration record or ‘hukou’, and therefore are not entitled to state-funded education. The Dandelion School, which was established in 2005, relies solely on donations and fundraising.
Danielle Slepyan and Emily L. Sonant, both 16, were inspired by the Dandelion School after Slepyan’s summer visit to Beijing as part of an educational program run by The China Institute. Slepyan said:
Raffles for Change offers a basket filled with items from a different culture every month, with tickets priced at $1 dollar each. After deductions, the money raised goes directly to the Dandelion School.
Sonant said the month’s themed basket is arranged to educate and increase understanding of the global environment, noting that the aim is as much to raise awareness as money.
With the help of banners and flyers, the co-founders of the organization may be able to further promote their fundraising efforts. So far, Slepyan and Sonant have raised approximately $200, and have set themselves the target of $1,000 by the year’s end.
